Helicopter Glacier Trekking is the best way to explore the scenic wonders of the Juneau Icefield’s glaciers and is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. This adventure includes learning a new ice hiking skills while exploring some of the most fascinating areas of these glaciers. No experience is necessary.
Take off in a modern turbine helicopter, soaring over the glaciers of the 1500 square-mile Juneau Icefield. The scenic terrain of mountain peaks, glacier icefalls and crevasses is revealed through the extraordinary visibility of the helicopter. The blue of Alaska’s glacial lakes is unsurpassed.
Touch down and your glacier experience begins. Spend two hours on the ice with a professional glacier guide teaching you basic mountaineering skills and the proper use of your equipment. Your guide will lead you on an interpretive hike that is both adventurous and easy. You will discover remarkable glacier features as you experience the magic of this landscape.
No experience is necessary, though you should be physically fit and able to walk over uneven surfaces. You’ll spend 30 minutes in helicopter; 2 hours on glacier. We will outfit you with rain and wind-proof jacket and pants, gloves, hard shell mountaineering boots, crampons, gaiters, harness with karabiner, ice-axe, and helmet. You’ll be fully prepared to safely and comfortably hike into areas of Southeast Alaska’s glaciers not normally accessible. A hip-pack with tissues, a granola bar, and bottled water will also be provided.
